Pigment of my Imagination
So, I’d recently stopped wearing a number of my clothes because of their fading, worn-out color. But instead of kicking them to the curb, I decided to do a some dyeing. Here are the little saturated sweeties:

Feathered gray shirt + scarlet dye

Obnoxious bright purple shirt + scarlet dye | Faded light green tunic + royal dye

Bright purple shirt + scarlet dye

White shirt with black print + black dye

Faded teal shirt + royal dye | White shirt + lemon dye

Light blue T-shirt + royal dye | Black T-shirt + black dye
And here’s how it went down:
Materials
~ 8 oz. containers of Rit Liquid Dye (found at Walmart)
~ 5 oz. paint bucket
~ A paint stick
~ Latex gloves
~ Water (derp derp)
~ Laundry detergent
My Approach
~ Add half a container of dye to three gallons of hot water. Stir thoroughly with a paint stick or something of the sort.
~ Add clothing. I put three pieces in at a time. Stir occasionally for 30 minutes.
~ Put plastic gloves on. Ring a piece of clothing out above bucket. Rub a little bit of laundry detergent on the clothing while rinsing it with warm water in a sink. Hang to dry and repeat with other clothing. (Make sure you thoroughly rinse the sink after doing this. I used an old sink in my basement, so I could be a little sloppy. But be careful if you’re using your kitchen sink, ahh!)
~ I plan to wash the clothes according to dye color in the washing machine before wearing them. I also plan to wash them by dye color the first time after wearing them for good measure. I’ll let you know how it goes…
Recent fashion finds

Coca Cola charm, key and dog collar tag snatched from my mom’s trinket collection in her studio and put on a long necklace chain

Mr. Ed pin — not a new purchase but a recent rediscovery. I believe this belonged to my grandmother, Blanche.
Eee! Eek! Eck!
Eee!
Today, something I’ve been wanting to happen to me for years actually happened: I found rugged cowboy boots in my size for cheap cheap cheap at a flea market. AMAZING. I have been on the hunt for these little darlings for oh so long. Yes, I already own boots, but they’re the I’m-trying-to-look-like-cowboy-boots-but-obviously-were-purchased-at-a-department-store kind. And guess what. I haggled and got this pair for $17. AMAZING.
Eek!
I also found these little wonders at the flea market. So creepy. So amusing!

This girl most definitely is possessed.
Eck!
After the flea market, my parents and I took a trip to Eckert’s. I hadn’t been there since I was a little girl with my grandmother, so visiting today brought back fond memories. And it was exciting to see flourishing apple trees. Hooray for autumn!
Good jeans
It’s a dirty shame someone in corporate America felt the need to label jeans as too casual for work. Seriously though. Who made khakis king of everything? And why is it OK for me to wear yoga pants (disguised as leggings) but not jeans? I totally understand that nasty, holey, torn-up jeans are not so professional. But there are good jeans out there that play well with accessories and deserve a chance. If I could wear jeans to work, it’d go a little like this:
Thank you for letting me vent.
Appearances by Tillie the pug and my have-not-been-to-yoga-in-forever-I-hate-you-Jenn body. Photos by my mom, who was quick to inform me she earned a minor in photography. Check out her jewelry, which is worn in a few of these photos, on her Facebook page.
She’s a thrifty one, that girl.
Hey! Guess what. Spending too much money on purses is lame. Finding vintage pieces on the cheap cheap cheap is rad. Here’s a handful of purses I found at Goodwill (Yes. Goodwill!), a couple of which went on to be art canvases.
Go on and get down with your thrifty self.

I decoupaged this one with magazine pieces.
Being barefoot
Well, I was going to write a girly post glorifying shoes. Yes, really. Describing my favorites and how they affect my mood. Poking fun at my obsession.
I thought snapping a photo of all of my shoes together would make me feel like a fashion diva. Instead, it made me feel a little disgusted.
It made me realize that, despite however kind and thankful I might think I am, materialism has penetrated a part of my identity. And if I don’t keep it in check, it’s easy to lose perspective.
I recently met this wonderful person who is helping out in Joplin this week and immediately after flying to Mozambique to help build a kitchen. Wow. Knowing of his journeys has made me step back and analyze myself a bit. It’s made me realize that while tornadoes were passing through the Heartland, I was freaking out that my new car might get hail damage. It’s made me realize that while people don’t have adequate shelter, I’ve been moping a little about giving up a “super cute” apartment in Clayton to house sit for someone.
It’s made me realize that I am so over myself.
I know what I’ve “discovered” is an incredibly simple concept pretty much everyone learns in grade school: Don’t be selfish. But I still think that sometimes we need to write down concepts like this (however basic they may be), sit with them and then share them with others to truly solidify the meaning in our heads.
I also realized recently that, when my flip-flop broke in the middle of the woods during a game of frisbee golf, everything was fine. When faced with a problem and considering the worst possible outcome– walking back to the car barefoot– it was not the end of the world. Sometimes being without and facing a challenge can wake us up and make us live a little deeper.
Sometimes, we need to be barefoot.
